To-Do
Please Answer the following Questions: provide a brief rationale for your answer — not just yes/no answers- which classes did you take outside of your chosen discipline?
- how did you select these classes?
- based on interest
- based on requirements for your degree program
- did would you evaluate the “outside classes”?
- a waste of time
- okay
- an enrichment of your education
- if you had a choice: would you take more outside classes?
- how did you select these classes?
- to be a well educated graduate in your respective discipline — what do you consider the most important objectives?
- did CU offer classes for you to meet these objectives?
- have you pursued these objectives outside of classes (in other settings at CU; outside of CU)?
- what do you consider the most important impact of new media and human-centered computing on YOUR education?
- which classes did you take outside of your chosen discipline?
- I have taken sociology, some applied math courses (matrix methods,Fourier series & boundary value problems, complex variables & applications), and am currently taking general psychology and a hip hop dance class. There were also some Herbst Humanities courses, a writing class, and a learning assistant program that I took.
- how did you select these classes? (e.g. based on interest or based on requirements for your degree program)
- The applied math courses I took weren't required but I decided to get an applied math minor so I had to choose a path of courses. There was some interest in Fourier series and complex variables. Sociology, psychology, writing, and the Herbst Humanities were required to fill in my humanities credits. The hip hop class I'm taking now is based on my background in bboying and I decided to take it for fun.
- how would you rate the “outside classes”? (e.g. a waste of time or an enrichment of your education)
- A few times I felt like it was a waste of time taking some of the courses due to stress in my core classes but currently, I feel like they were/are an enrichment of my education. I believe that after taking the humanities credits, it helped me realize some of the ethics in engineering and that we are also designing for the people. The shifts in behaviors over a culture and economic advantages/disadvantages affects the engineer in the way we design because of society's desires and needs. The applied mathematics courses helped me realize that as I get more specialized in a field, I would need more math. The hip hop class is also an enrichment to my education because it helps explain some of the history and provides me with other styles and techniques. The learning assistant program was a waste of time as I already understand that different people learn different ways and different methods work for different groups. The good that came out of it was that I was able to meet with other learning assistants outside of the applied math courses.
- if you had a choice: would you take more outside classes?
- Yes, I would probably take a few more dance and psychology courses.
- to be a well educated graduate in your respective discipline — what do you consider the most important objectives?
- While it is important to be knowledgeable in my respective discipline, I believe that electrical and computer engineers need to also have strengths in writing, mathematics, an understanding of society and each individual's the conscious mind, and a strong passion for something that drives you.
- did CU offer classes for you to meet these objectives?
- Yes, CU did offer classes and groups that meet these objectives!
- have you pursued these objectives outside of classes (in other settings at CU; outside of CU)?
- Yes, I have pursued bboying, which has become my passion and drives me. I also read the news and look up new technologies to try and keep up with changes in society and how it may impact the individual. In my undergraduate research, I am still applying what I learned in my applied math courses to understand what is going on since electrical and computer engineering did not teach me about fluid mechanics. Some of this work continuously challenges my math skills.
- hat do you consider the most important impact of new media and human-centered computing on YOUR education?
- I consider collaboration between people the most important impact of new media and human centered computing on my education because we cannot do it alone. We can but it would be very difficult. With today's new media, the technology on the internet (i.e. Google Docs, Google Instant, Google Wave, GitHub, blogs, wikis, Twitter, Facebook) and smart phones, shared information has been become easier to access in real time with the provided architecture and aids in reinforcing the knowledge learned in my education. Most of my courses (engineering and non-engineering) that I have taken encouraged students to work in groups or study for tests. The creation of the new media has made it easier to complete assignments and meet with people in classes or organizations. As the late John Heywood put it, "two heads are [truly] better than one."
