To-Do

The paper makes this claim: “Web 2.0 is creating a new kind of participatory medium that is ideal for supporting multiple modes of learning.” For purposes of this assignment, pick a mode of learning which you consider the most important and most exciting for YOU!

Which idea/claim discussed in the article did you find most interesting?
I thought that the claim that social learning is more effective than traditional Cartesian learning is the most interesting in this article.  Not only is it important to learn content, it’s important to learn how to interact and share ideas with others in the process of learning.  These skills are critical both in the classroom and the real world, and students are rewarded by being more engaged and learning more significantly than those who study alone.
With which idea/claim do you disagree the most?
I think that this article de-emphasizes the content of education a little too much, but overall I do agree with most of the claims.
What learning style did you choose for purposes of this assignment?
Learning to be
What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning About"?
Most of it. Around 85%
What are the strengths of "learning about" from your experience?
Learning about can be great because it really drills the facts into you. Especially at a younger age, there are some things that you just have to have shoved at you over and over again and then you will get it. We still do it today too. Things like math formulas are good to learn just by doing example after example after example. Like Calculus is something very few people need to know, so you are not learning to be, but the way they teach it is still good.
What are the weaknesses of "learning about" from your experience?
In general, "Learning About" is a bad practice. Yes it is good for some things, but learning facts and memorizing them is not the way to learn. Facts are forgotten even when they are memorized. When people study for a test, they will no the material, but right after the test or class, it will probably be mostly forgotten. When you "learn about", you learn, but not in a meaningful way.
What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning to be"?
Probably around 15%. Less than ideal.
What are the strengts of "learning to be" from your experience?
One strength is the ability to understand how things you learn in class can be applied to real world work environments. It is very important to learn what a profession or career entails beyond concepts learned in college. The biggest strength is building your knowledge of certain topics from real world applications.
What are the weaknesses of "learning to be" from your experience?
Certain companies, schools, and organizations will use different techniques than others. While you still gain the experience, it can be easy to get stuck in one pattern of work. Exposing yourself to many different styles can be extremely helpful.
Do you agree or disagree with the following claim: “everyone is interested in something and feels passionate about it.”
Agree
Name something that YOU are personally interested in and feel passionate about.
Photography
Is the following statement true for YOUR passion: “for any topic that a student is passionate about, there is likely to be an online niche community of practice of others who share that passion.”
It's true of my passion and of just about every other passion. In a world of 6.5 billion people, there is bound to be a community—somewhere—that shares the same passion. And almost 30% of them are on the web. Even the most unusual passion I could think of someone having, "pterodactyl fetish", brings up 279,000 results.
If not: could it become a reality in the future?
N/A
