We want people to be able to understand what is using energy, how much it is using and what they can do to use less. We have decided the best way to go about studying how to represent energy usage to consumers is to each design a way to present the usage. We then will collaborate on which points we think are the strongest and weakest from each idea and find a way to mold these into one beautiful design. 18: 19: Our three different themes are: 20: 21: * Physical Representations 22: * Competition/Achievement Systems 23: * Personal Motivation 24: 25: ((( 26: Group Management:Members have chosen a theme or idea to explore and will be focusing on this first and foremost. We will be meeting each week to collaborate and receive feedback from each other about our progress. The goal is to try different styles of energy representation and find out why some work better than others. 27: ))) 28: 29: **Project Members:** 30: 31: [[Matthew Thurston>>AXMatthewThurston]] 32: 33: I have been researching to decide what type of representation I think will work well. I have decided that an "in your face" appliance based representation is what I will focus on. It creates a constant reminder to people to conserve and is based off the notion that people want to conserve for one reason or another. 34: 35: [[Tyler Howarth>>XWiki.tylerhowarth]]: 36: 37: I have been researching different motivational factors and forms of visualization. I am leaning towards an achievement/competition system but am very interested in working with matthew on some physical implementations. Over the next few weeks, I am going to research various competitive and achievement-based social systems so that I may design an effective system for energy use. 38: 39: Michael Odbert: 40: 41: It seems to me that the best way to motivate people to save energy is through competition among other people. I have been focusing and will continue to focus on different strategies that will have people compete with one another or maybe even with themselves to save energy. I am mostly interested in working with Tyler on some ideas he had where there is an achievement system where you can gain points for saving energy which can in turn be spent to get cool things or maybe take some money off your bill. I also like the idea of neighbors competing as well as neighborhoods competing and maybe even regions competing. There are so many different ways for people to have fun while saving energy that the possibilities are endless. Also, one way to start saving energy is make it fun for kids, so they start growing up saving energy and continue to do so later in life. I'm going to keep looking into all these areas and start thinking up an implementation for them all. 42: 43: [[Terry Smith>>XWiki.TerrySmith]]: 44: 45: I have been researching what some of the best motivators for energy saving are. Simply making energy users aware of how much energy they are using or using more intuitive units when displaying the data sounds the most promising, and I will continue to pursue this motivator while sketching up designs for visualizations. My ideas can be incorporated into my group members' designs to create one cohesive visualization. 46: 47: Jennifer Carlson: 48: 49: I have been researching different models of energy, and I'm interested in the best motivators for energy use are. We've discussed in class that some energy conservation methods don't save the consumer much money, and people might be more inclined to save if they knew the positive impact they were having. I am interested in working with Michael and Terry to work out a visualization of energy use that not only incorporates monetary saving but also allows the consumer to see their direct impact on their community and the environment.
