To-Do

Step 1:

  • Try to find some relevant information (anywhere on the web) related to YOUR problem or topic.
Step 2: visit the website “OpenEI” Step 3: analyze and discuss
  • Can you locate any relevant information about YOUR problem in OpenEI? Describe what you find there.
  • What it would take for you to contribute information (which you may have found in step 1) to this site and what would motivate you to do so!
1. Describe the energy-related problem or topic your group selected.
Our group decided to focus on the increasing use and energy efficiency of public transportation.

In our opinion, reducing fossil fuels by carpooling or using public transportation can't hurt. Considering this is a no lose solution that can be made by little lifestyle changes, the resultant time restricting excessive use of fossil fuels can be nothing but beneficial. With this time, we can develop alternative solutions or more effective methods of transportation that won't be as harmful to the environment. Also, the given time will yield more developed and tested results, hopefully.

2. Describe any Web resources you found about that problem or topic.
A great website that we found on the topic was actually a government site, encouraging the use of electric vehicles in both the public transportation and government sector. An interesting side effect of this process would be to encourage the market in producing electric vehicles, driving research and development, and eventually have an effect on the public sector. This would both increase the use and energy efficiency of public transportation, from a NGO point of view, on the extremely macro scale.

"Electric vehicles have become a strategic focus of the automotive industry during recent years, but the technology is still nascent in the global marketplace. EVI is a government-led global initiative that will collaborate with relevant industry, academic, and end-user stakeholders to dramatically scale-up electric vehicle sales.

In recognition of the fact that governments can play a critical role as a testing ground for electric vehicles and their corresponding infrastructure, participating countries will establish pilot projects in several cities for the demonstration of electric vehicles in public transportation and government use.

The primary objectives of the pilot are:

  1. Promoting cooperation on the research and development, demonstration, and commercialization of electric vehicles;
2. Sharing experience in policy, management, data analysis, and publicity, etc. to support the scale-up of electric vehicles; 3. Exploring universal standards for vehicle evaluation, infrastructure, and communication protocols; and, 4. Conducting analyses of the demonstrations, including cost-effectiveness assessments."

3. Describe any related OpenEI resources you found.
One online resource we found off of the openei.org website was the Urban Trasnsportation Emission Calculator (). If users are interested in figuring out their emissions based on their transportation type, This tool allows them to do so to a very accurate degree. Individual makes and models for cars and trains are included. This can be useful if a user is interested in comparing two cars for which the emissions may be relatively similar. Another site we found off of openei.org that related to lowering emissions was the site that listed the Active World Bank Climate Projects in Columbia (). This site documents the efforts in Columbia to encourage the use of public transportation specifically for poor communities and to reduce overall traffic but the effects on emissions are far reaching as well.
4. Discuss what it would take for you to contribute information (such as what you may have found in step 1) to the OpenEI site and what would motivate you to do so.
Knowing the viewers of this site are all actively conscious of the environment, we'd feel compelled to contribute any information we had to expand the general knowledge base provided by the site. Having an emotional investment into the environment and being an active component of the community would also affect whether we'd make additions to the site. We'd be motivated to contribute if we felt strongly about the topic at hand. Also, if we noticed something on the site was inaccurate and should be corrected, we'd feel the need to make a fix.
