(% class="western" style="page-break-before: always;" %) == Project-2: Identification and Analysis of Existing Meta-Design Environments == (% style="margin-bottom: 0in;" %) (% style="font-family: Palatino;" %)In this project you will be working to define the concept of meta-design, identify existing meta-design environments, and provide an objective analysis of their features, success, and failures. Success/failure in these cases can be measured many ways from the number of people that utilize meta-design features to the skill level required to participate. (% class="western" %) === Objectives: === (% style="margin-bottom: 0in;" %) (% style="font-family: Palatino;" %)Once you have selected and analyzed environments try to answer the following questions: 1. (% style="font-family: Palatino;" %)In what ways do these environments support meta-design? 1. (% style="font-family: Palatino;" %)Are they more successful or less successful than the other environments you analyzed, why? 1. (% style="font-family: Palatino;" %)Finally, taking all of the above into account, what design guidelines or principals would you employ when building your own meta-design environment? (% class="western" %) === Starting Points: === (% style="margin-bottom: 0in;" %) (% style="font-family: Palatino;" %)Start by researching existing literature. What are the core properties of a meta-design environment? What differentiates meta-design environments from design environments? (% style="margin-bottom: 0in;" %) (% style="font-family: Palatino;" %)**Possible examples:** Yahoo Pipes, Microsoft Macros (% align="CENTER" lang="en-GB" style="margin-top: 0.08in; page-break-after: avoid;" %) {{id name="_Ref112766483"}}{{/id}} **Table 1: Related Work—Selected Web 2.0 Environments with Unique Features** (% border="1" bordercolor="#000080" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="524" %) (% valign="TOP" %)|(% bgcolor="#000080" width="85" %)(% style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" %)**Site**|(% bgcolor="#000080" width="143" %)(% style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" %)**Objectives**|(% bgcolor="#000080" width="257" %)(% style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" %)**Interesting Unique Aspects** (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**iTunes U**|(% width="143" %)distribute digital lessons by faculty members from “certified institutions”|(% width="257" %)//control via input filters//; material can not be remixed and altered by consumers; support for mobile learning (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**YouTube**|(% width="143" %)video sharing website|(% width="257" %)//weak input filters//; extensive support for rating (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**Encyclopedia of Life (EoL)**|(% width="143" %)document the 1.8 million living [[species>>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species||class="western"]] known to science|(% width="257" %)development of an //extensive curator network//; partnership between the scientific community and the general public (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**Google-Maps**|(% width="143" %)maps and task-related directions|(% width="257" %)evolution of commercially developed mapping information with //users’ additions// (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**Google-SketchUp and 3D Warehouse**|(% width="143" %)model the whole world in 3D|(% width="257" %)//very large repository// of 3D models created by volunteers; the 3D Warehouse is organized in collections by curators (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**Scratch**|(% width="143" %)programming environment and support for sharing creations|(% width="257" %)socio-technical environment to build //communities in education// for creativity; the Scratch Warehouse hosts 1.2 Mio projects (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**PatientsLikeMe**|(% width="143" %)enables patients who suffer from life-changing diseases to converse|(% width="257" %)site based of contributions from patients complementing sites created by health experts and organizations (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**Crisis Informatics**|(% width="143" %)explores the synthesis between broadcast news and information provided by involved people|(% width="257" %)technology-mediated support for public participation & assistance in mass emergencies & disasters (% valign="TOP" %)|(% width="85" %)**Stepgreen**|(% width="143" %)collaborative constructed library of energy saving actions|(% width="257" %)shared repository of tips and recommendations by citizen contributors for saving money and being environmentally responsible (% class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0in;" %) **Sponsors:** Jane Meyers ((% style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);" %)__[[jane.meyers@colorado.edu>>mailto:jane.meyers@colorado.edu||class="western" onclick="window.open('http://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=jane.meyers@colorado.edu','Compose new message','width=640,height=480')" rel="noreferrer"]]__(%%)) and Gerhard Fischer
