To-Do

  1. study the document “Projects for the HCC Foundation Course” (in “Students’ Projects” on the Wiki)
  2. select a project that is of real interest to you
  3. find collaborators and form a group of peers (such a group may already exist) with whom you will work on the project
  4. sign up for the project (if it is still available) on the site “Students’ Projects
  5. identify parts of the project and an initial role distribution between your team members
  6. each team member should contribute
    1. a brief rational what she/he finds interesting
    2. what she/he plans to do to get started on the project
Which project did you select?
Representing and Visualizing Energy Use
Describe the parts of the project you have identified and the initial role distribution among your team members

The parts of the project are listed under the objectives section in the project description

  • Develop new ideas for new visualizations/representations. Support this idea with a theory or model of how why your representation should be effective. You can make use of technologies such as tweet-a-watt, web 2.0 environments, mobile devices (android/iPad).
  • Implement a demo/prototype of your new representation
  • Develop ways to test your representation; you could use:
    • AMTurk,
    • User Studies, or
    • Other methods
  • Perform initial assessments and present results
  • (potential further work: independent study, create more robust implementation and evaluate in after-school activities)

For each team member, provide a brief rational what she/he finds interesting
I find this project interesting because I will get to design and test a prototype, rather than perform pure research. Also, energy usage is a relevant issue in today's world. I would like to learn how we can get people to save energy. -Terry Smith

I thought this project sounded interesting because it focuses on changes that can be made for the greater good. I think it's important to be energy-conscious, and I'm interested in exploring new ideas in order to achieve a positive change in energy consumption. -Jennifer Carlson

This project interests me because I have always been an advocate for green technologies and movements. I strive to be aware of my energy usage, but I feel that there needs to be better tools to help consumers. I am particularly interested in what motivates people's choices and decisions when it comes to "being green" -Tyler Howarth

I think this project is interesting because I think saving energy is important, but it's something that not many people do. It would be awesome if we could work on a way to show people the amount of energy they are using in a helpful way. That would hopefully lead to people saving more energy, which would be super. -Michael Odbert

I think this will be an interesting project because energy use is such a big topic right now it will be fun to work on something which is current. We all know that saving energy in worthwhile in someway to everyone so it will be interesting to try to find a way for people to recognize their use. -Matthew Thurston

For each team member, provide a statement of what she/he plans to do to get started on the project
To get started on the project, I will come up with several ideas for what motivates people to save energy. These ideas and the ideas the rest of my group comes up with will eventually be incorporated into a prototype. -Terry Smith

To start, I will come up with several ideas for what motivates people to save energy and research a few sites that already monitor energy use. -Jennifer Carlson

To start out, I would like to research current technologies, and dive into different types of motivation. I would also like to study which platforms would be most effective (mobile, web, etc.) I'd to find out how social networking can have an effect on energy consumption. -Tyler Howarth

To start off, like the rest of my group, I'll do some research into what drives people to save energy and how people/companies show users how much they are consuming in a way that will make the user try to use less. -Michael Odbert

To start, like the rest of my group I will look into how to encourage people to save energy and how to best show them their energy usage to help enable them to save. -Matthew Thurston
