To-Do
The paper makes this claim: “Web 2.0 is creating a new kind of participatory medium that is ideal for supporting multiple modes of learning.” For purposes of this assignment, pick a mode of learning which you consider the most important and most exciting for YOU!- Which idea/claim discussed in the article did you find most interesting?
- The most interesting idea in the article to me was the idea of lecturing in the game Second Life.
- With which idea/claim do you disagree the most?
- The idea that I disagree with the most is the idea that students should start in the "learn to be" before entering into the "learn about" categories. I believe that at least the very basics of knowledge need to be acquired before one can even consider entering into a specific field. Llearn to be" can be incorporated into this, but the basis must just be leaning the base information to go out into the world and become a valuable contributor.
- What learning style did you choose for purposes of this assignment?
- Learn to be
- What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning About"?
- 85%-90%
- What are the strengths of "learning about" from your experience?
- The strengths of "learning about" are that the students learn the fundamentals of what is needed in life/industry without the burden of getting into specific details of industry. Also, it is much easier to start with learning the basics and then move in to the world. Finally, most of the basics learned would be applicable over many different professions.
- What are the weaknesses of "learning about" from your experience?
- Weaknesses of "learning about" include the fact that not all of the basics learned will be applicable in later life, and also the knowledge gained is not really specific to any particular industry.
- What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning to be"?
- 10%-15%
- What are the strengts of "learning to be" from your experience?
- Strengths of "learning to be" include the fact that what is learned will, in most cases, be applicable in later life. Also, with this learning strategy it is usually easier to collaborate with elders, mentors, peers, etc.
- What are the weaknesses of "learning to be" from your experience?
- Some weaknesses of "learning to be" include the fact that it is hard to learn the basic knowledge while also trying to focus on learning specifics to an industry. Also, sometimes the knowledge gained can be very narrow in depth and therefore would not be easily transferable to other professions.
- Do you agree or disagree with the following claim: “everyone is interested in something and feels passionate about it.”
- I agree
- Name something that YOU are personally interested in and feel passionate about.
- Computer/network security
- Is the following statement true for YOUR passion: “for any topic that a student is passionate about, there is likely to be an online niche community of practice of others who share that passion.”
- The statement "For any topic that a student is passionate about, there is likely to be an online niche community or practice of others who share that passion" is very true in terms of computer and network security.
- If not: could it become a reality in the future?
- It's true.
