To-Do
The paper makes this claim: “Web 2.0 is creating a new kind of participatory medium that is ideal for supporting multiple modes of learning.” For purposes of this assignment, pick a mode of learning which you consider the most important and most exciting for YOU!- Which idea/claim discussed in the article did you find most interesting?
- With which idea/claim do you disagree the most?
- What learning style did you choose for purposes of this assignment?
- Learning To Be
- What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning About"?
- 80%
- What are the strengths of "learning about" from your experience?
- Having some knowledge in your head is a good thing. Learning to do things like math by doing pages and pages of problems is helpful. Study groups might help if you don't understand how to do a problem, but overall, it is just helpful to know the information of how to do it. Learning facts like dates and names for history classes is something that is also just a "learning about" environment. "Learning about" has its strengths in getting people the pure facts and figures. If you want to just learn the facts of something, a lecture in a "learning about" style is the way to go.
- What are the weaknesses of "learning about" from your experience?
- If you want to know more than the facts, "learning about" isn't always very helpful. If you want to know opinions of people and discuss things with your fellow students to get other views about things from those same history classes, "learning about" isn't going to get you there. "Learning about" doesn't help you get anything past the facts and figures.
- What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning to be"?
- 20%
- What are the strengts of "learning to be" from your experience?
- "Learning to be" has helped me be a better programmer, for one. In peer programming homework sessions and labs, I have learned more from my classmates about things that we don't learn in lecture. Styles and how to figure out what's gone wrong with a program, for example.
- What are the weaknesses of "learning to be" from your experience?
- Sometimes working alone has its advantages. You don't have the pressure of having to speak up when you have nothing to add to the conversation. If you just want to sit back and listen and learn from listening, "learning to be" isn't always the way to go.
- Do you agree or disagree with the following claim: “everyone is interested in something and feels passionate about it.”
- I disagree. You can be interested in lots of things but passionate about nothing.
- Name something that YOU are personally interested in and feel passionate about.
- User Interface/Interaction/Experience/Centered Design
- Is the following statement true for YOUR passion: “for any topic that a student is passionate about, there is likely to be an online niche community of practice of others who share that passion.”
- Yes. For example, iTunes U has a list of classes entitled things like "Usability Counts" and "Intro to User Interface Design." There are conferences, too, for designers to get together and collaborate and learn from each other.
- If not: could it become a reality in the future?
