To-Do

The paper makes this claim: “Web 2.0 is creating a new kind of participatory medium that is ideal for supporting multiple modes of learning.” For purposes of this assignment, pick a mode of learning which you consider the most important and most exciting for YOU!

Which idea/claim discussed in the article did you find most interesting?
One idea I found very interesting was the idea of using the Internet for social learning. As a student, I have already begun using the Internet to help me learn.  Each person can use it in unique way that works for them because the Internet is so vast and contains so much information.
With which idea/claim do you disagree the most?
I disagree with the idea of virtual environments for learning.  It seems like it would be difficult to learn in a virtual environment. I feel that virtual environments are escapes for people and they would not want to spoil that place. I have not tried learning in a virtual environment, but I do not think I would want to spend the time building a characterture and persona for a fake place to learn.
What learning style did you choose for purposes of this assignment?
What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning About"?
75%
What are the strengths of "learning about" from your experience?
Learning About gives you the information you need to know.  It goes into some applications of this information and where other people use it. The student know what is important and what is less important. A teacher will put emphasis on the material the students absolutely need to know. It can be quite black and white.
What are the weaknesses of "learning about" from your experience?
Learning About can make it difficult to see why someone should care about this information.  The student can learn and memorize facts and algorithms, but they may not always see why it is important. Learning About focuses on getting the data to the students, not always on the importance of the information in the real world.
What percentage of your overall educational experience is "Learning to be"?
25%
What are the strengts of "learning to be" from your experience?
Learning to Be puts the student in the mindset of a professional in the field.  They can see how this person uses the tools they are learning.  They can see what people have found works well and what does not work as well.  The true importance of what the students are learning becomes more apparent.
What are the weaknesses of "learning to be" from your experience?
Learning to Be can place emphasis on some areas of a field and leave out others.  If the students only see people using a couple of methods, they may only think those are the important ones, which may not be the case. There could be several important aspects to that field of study, but the students may not participate in them all.  They would then be missing parts of their education.
Do you agree or disagree with the following claim: “everyone is interested in something and feels passionate about it.”
Yes I agree.
Name something that YOU are personally interested in and feel passionate about.
Drumming
Is the following statement true for YOUR passion: “for any topic that a student is passionate about, there is likely to be an online niche community of practice of others who share that passion.”
Yes. There is a massive drumming community. When I meet other drummers, we can talk for hours at a time. Other communities may not be as large, but I have yet to find something I am interested that no one else is.
If not: could it become a reality in the future?
