Gerhard Fischer and Hal Eden Fall Semester 2008
CSCI 3002-001and CSCI 7000-002: A Joint Graduate and Undergraduate Course

Assignment 1

due:

  1. Wednesday, September 3, 2008; 9 am on the class website - max length: two pages
  2. you can work as a group and submit one answer as a group (clearly identifying the members of your group)
Digital and Social Systems (DSS) Research and Practice covers a number of disciplines - and each of these disciplines has its more focused agenda.

Learn (by browsing the web, by reading an article, by talking to peers, by talking to faculty members) about:
  • Human Computer Interaction
  • Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW)
  • Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL)
  • Design of Interactive Systems
  • Participatory Design
  • User Modeling
  • one additional topic of your choice which you consider relevant for DSS
Please do:
  • describe each of these topics in your own words in one or two sentences
  • provide the URL / article which you found most interesting about each of the topics
  • choose one topic and discuss it in more detail addressing specifically why it is relevant to your own work and interests

Responses Reviewed

Diversity

Interestingly no two peope in the class have chosen the same topic as the topic of choice. Also, the topics are fairly wide spread -- this diversity in interests should allow for interesting in-class discussions.

Problems (or not?)

  • A few people haven't linked their assignments from their individual profile pages. If you are one of them: Please do so now! :)
  • Quite a few people didn't seem to like the idea to describe the topics in only one or two sentences and/or added information on how they personally relate to or think about the topics. While this wasn't asked for and thus won't have any influence on grades or so, I thought that it often made for a more interesting reading (especially for people that were reading all the answers :)

Possible Discussions

Looking at the responses, it seems that there are few things that might be worth discussing in class.

  • What is an interface? In the definitions of HCI there seemed to be ambiguity about what an interface is or is not.
  • What is an wikipedia-article? How can it be cited?

How to Respond

To respond to this assignment:

  • create a page linked into your profile with a name that is indicative that it is assignment one and with some indication of the authors
    • to create a page using the "link method" put the name of the document prefixed with "DSSF2008." between square brackets. Example: [DSSF2008.PageName-YourName] When you save-and-view your profile, you can click on the link to the page and it will create a new page in the course space.
    • you can also create the page using the create panel on the left. Again, prefix it with "DSSF2008." Example: DSSF2008.PageName-YourName
You will still have to put the link where you want it eventually using the square bracket syntax.
  • tag this page with the tag: "a1" (it will then appear in the list below)
