- Question: In the future, do you think the majority of 3d models will be made by humans, or computers? Are you trying to move towards easier and easier use by humans, or towards more and more automation?
Rationale: I can imagine that in the future there will be video cameras which can generate a 3d model of the objects that they are seeing, so this could take over the work involved in modeling objects which already exist. However, people also want to model objects which do not exist in the world. - 3. 3D Warehouse
- Question: Do you worry about people using the detailed models of real cities in the 3D warehouse, and GPS positions of Google Earth to plan crimes?
Rationale: As Shneiderman says, all technology can be used for evil as well as for good. Paranoid security experts tend to like to dream up "Hollywood" plots involving modern technology. Here is Bruce Schneier downplaying one such idea, related to using the GPS coordinates of football stadiums to plan terrorist attacks: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2006/04/terrorism_risks_1.html Schneier concludes, "I have no idea how anyone could print this drivel. Anyone can attend a football game with a GPS receiver in his pocket and get the coordinates down to one meter. Or buy a map. Google Earth is not the problem; the problem is the availability of short-range missiles on the black market."
