- 2. SketchUp
- Even though a professional edition is available, SketchUp seems to largely be marketed and targeted towards users without CAD or professional drafting experience. To what extent is SketchUp actually being used by professionals in architecture, design, engineering, etc.? Similarly, at what point does SketchUp enter their workflow? This is important as many designers and architects seem to still prefer sketching and idea formation through traditional pen and paper methods to work out rough drafts. If designers and architects can begin truly sketching on digital platforms, they can gain all the advantages that the word processor provided for writing (editing, saving, sharing, etc.). There may also be a huge productivity increase by being able to take digital sketches and easily transitioning them to more formalized and definitive models. However, if traditional pen and paper are still preferred for early idea forming, understanding what deficiencies the computer has is important for future development.
- 3. 3D Warehouse
- What was the growth rate like for the 3D warehouse? Did the warehouse exist before the Google acquisition, and if not, how much of an influence did the "Google Halo" provide to achieving support for the warehouse and a critical mass for survival? Creating a successful social network or shared data repository is dependent on having a healthy and active number of contributors. If there are too few contributors, no one participates due to lack of value and the community can not survive. As more contribute, more see value and sustain growth in the network. This poses obvious challenges to starting a new community and growing past a critical mass or tipping point for survival. Understanding how the 3D warehouse grew can provide insight into understanding how to successfully build a network from the ground up.
