- On page 93, Shneiderman describes some problem with creating a personal, family, and friends photo database which is easily searchable. Among those problems is the time consuming nature of annotating photos. The solution presented with PhotoFinder is to provide the user with a menu of common names. I wonder if this is where Facebook got it's idea for "tagging" people in your photos since it is a remarkably similar process and the image in the book looks very familiar. Facebook also provides a method for removing tags of oneself as suggested in the book. Through Facebook, users are allowed to create Albums of pictures (a "collect" activity) and share them with their friends through tagging (a "donate" activity) which will send an email to their friends for confirmation. Also, users are able to make comments on photos, reminiscing on past events and occasions (a "relate" activity). If users wanted, they could also save these photos for their own personal use and create a photo book or collage (a "create" activity). There are numerous sites offering this type of social networking these days, with MySpace and Facebook being in the foreground. This still relatively new type of service is changing the way people interact. Looking back a couple of years ago, relationships with classmates and co-workers would primarily stay in the classroom or workplace with a few exceptions. Now, you become online friends with your classmate or co-worker and are able to see pictures of what they did last weekend. People are starting to learn a lot more about each other through the advancement of social networks like these.
