Document Q1KyuhanKoh
- 1. Your Name
- Kyu Han Koh
- 2. Your field of study?
- Computer Science (HCI)
- 3. In which semester of study are you?
- Fourth semester in Phd program
- 4. Why are you interested in taking this course?
- I'm majoring in HCI. Also, I am interested in end user development; I might call it social creativity. I have been interested in this class since it was announced to open. Personally, I believe that good design and good method, it could mean new media, could increase social creativities or motivate users more actively in their whatever-system they belong to. Especially, now we are living in the world of Web 2.0, the information on the web does not flow in one way. It is not one way traffic any more. Users became producers, and producers became users too. The flow chart became more complex than ever before.
And I think this course will cover all that things.
- 5. What courses / work activities / background knowledge do you have which might be relevant to this course?
- I've taken UI design and HCI class before. I think it might be relevant to this course.
In addition, I'm building a web site interactively working with mediawiki; it is about 'open class'. I think it is all about design, creativity and new media.
- 6. Indicate your own digital literacy / fluency:
6.1. Describe your programming experience (languages, projects)
- C++/C, Java, Python, PHP, Ruby…
I've studied Agentsheets, Alice 3D, Squeak for my master thesis, but I might call them applications.
- 6.2. What applications are you familiar with (e.g. Photoshop, Canvas, Dreamweaver,...)?
- I used to work with photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver etc, but not that much nowadays.
- 7. Give a brief description of the most important book / article which you have read with respect to the topic of the course.
- It might be Leonardo's Laptop. I read this book last year, but I didn't know it was kind of text book of the intro course to DSS. It was good reading to learn the view of designer. The design of everyday thing by Dr. Norman would be also good reference to the topic of the course. I'd like to recommend to everyone considering to be any type of designer.
- 8. What do you hope and expect to learn from this course?
- Quite many things are so intertwined nowadays. Web technology does not mean only IT technology, it is more about behavioral science and social science. We need to look into the designs and creativities as human activities of fundamental importance in our living world. More we analyze them, more we get valuable information to design better systems; I might call it culture.
I expect to learn how to work interactively in this new type of culture from this class.
