In high school I took a course called Multimedia, this course was entirely based on the use of the tool which has become known as Adobe Director. I took the class twice, in my first iteration through the class the goal was to use Director to create movies. These movies were very simple in nature lasting usually 90 seconds or so. The initial experience was totally new for me and as a child who wasn't skilled at "traditional" art forms it unlocked new doors for creative thought. This was the first time I can remember having a method in which to tell a story.(Imagine) Over the course of the semester I played with the software extensively and found myself thoroughly enjoying the assignments.(Create/Play) One of the most important elements of the class was the sharing of your creation, at the end of every cycle of creation the entire class watched the creations of all members of the class.(Share) The step of sharing was critical as it sparked my imagination further, I remember the first time I saw another student incorporate a button into his movie, I realized the potential for interaction, turning the movie into a game.(Reflect) But by this the course was almost over, so I enrolled in it for a second time. As a result of the movies I saw created by other students I was inspired to begin the process anew, this time instead of building movies I built simple games that emulated more complex games available on the commercial market.(Imagine) The tool in my example is clearly Director, which was very vital, as a child who did not like to draw, sculpt, or do other 'traditional' art forms Director unlocked the creative spiral to me in a way I had never before experienced.
