To-Do
please create an answer via the form for this assignment addressing the following issues:
- which was the most interesting idea/concept you learned from the article? what is the relationship of this idea/concept to your own work and own thinking?
- which is the most prominent meta-design environment you can think off? Why?
- analyze one computational environment in detail from a meta-design perspective? (if you can't think of a better one: analyze Microsoft-Word)
- argue in which sense the American constitution may be considered as a success example for meta-design
- Most interesting idea/concept
- the most interesting idea that i grew from the paper is that there needs to be a reward system to help the meta design, to keep people motivated to keep contributing to Open Source Projects. I think that it is interesting that there are direct relations to reward systems to the amount of contributions to a open source project.
- Most Prominent Example
- Youtube is the most prominent example of metadesign because it rewards the contributer because they can see their work displayed among the heap and see how it compares to everyone else. it allows users to see how their contributions stack up to the rest of the world and to see what the public thinks of their work. it not only gives a sense that the user has done something but it allows them to feel rewarded to actually feel that they are a part of the project and that their contributions are not going unnoticed
- Detailed Analysis
- Microsoft Word is not the greatest computational environment because it does not really allow you to work exactly the way you want. it limits your creativity and because you are forced into a certain paradigm. Microsoft Word limits your ability to use all sorts of templates and doesnt really allow for a quick transition to different formatting styles. this limits your creativity because the mass of the user base will not even explore any other alternative to their writing and because microsoft word does not stress other formatting styles then the user will start to think in a certain way, limiting their creativity
- American constitution as Meta-Design
- The American Constitution is a good example of a successful meta-design. The document was written shortly after this nation was founded, so it served as a foundation to the structure of the United States Government. The Constitution allows room for growth and evolution, as the Founding Fathers expected the young country to expand. The Constitution really has a sort of dualism in its design - there was an end goal for the document (a workable constitution), but at the same time, part of that end goal was to produce an evolving document that would never truly be finished.
