    There is some interesting research that might be applicable. They had developed a vibrotactile belt that would allow the visually impaired (and possibly others, like bikers, joggers, etc) to navigate using haptics. Basically, they'd made a belt with vibromotors from cell phones going around it. The belt would indicate turns by buzzing on whichever side you would turn toward.
