The paper says that the process of conducting the last formative study was ongoing, and that one of its objectives was "to determine when patients input the food data." What were the results of this study?

If a major problem with traditional diaries is that patients don't record anything until the end of the day, I don't see many benefits of DIMA unless it can somehow encourage patients to record as the day progresses, and not after the fact. You can make things easier with tools like barcode scanning, but if patients still don't have the motivation to record their information at the proper time, it doesn't seem like the new system has many advantages over the traditional method. In fact, motivation itself is an interesting question in this domain...I would think that knowing that not adhering to proper restrictions can cause serious complications and death would be enough motivation to adhere to the diary, whether it be in the form of a PDA or paper and pencil.
