HCI is the study of how people create and use computer systems as well as how computer systems affect individuals and organizations.

Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW)
Activity that is performed by collaborating individuals and assisted by computer systems. Largely business oriented.

Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL)
Focused on how collaborative learning can be supported and enhanced through the use of computer systems. Largely academic oriented.

Information Visualization
Discipline concerned with the selection, transformation, and representation of data to foster human understanding.
http://www.visualcomplexity.com/ #bubblec('For my job, we focus on', 'Is that a research/university job or private industry? Sounds interesting :)') how best to arrange and communicate data related to the drug discovery and development process. This process requires balancing new arrangements and visualizations of the data against what the scientific end users can understand and utilize in their decision making process. Much of the visualization work is informed by Tufte (http://www.edwardtufte.com) and user required interactions (sorting, drill down, de/compositions, etc) are layered over as required. I'm hoping a more grounded knowledge in Interactive System Design / HCI will help better guide this process.
